On our 2006 tour of the Balkans we had the pleasure of visiting several cities in Turkey. This country, right on the border of Europe and Asia, is one of the most fascinating places I have ever been. The outdoor market places, the historic Mosques, and the busy hustle of Istanbul were major highlights, but the most incredible part was the music.
Unlike all styles we hear growing up in America, it is very common for Balkan music to be built on odd time signatures. It was very interesting to discover the different feels in various regions. We heard 11/8 in Macedonia, 5/4 in Serbia, 7/8 in Greece and a lot of 9/8 in Turkey.
This rhythm, counted as 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3… , was everywhere. We heard it on the radio, in the cafes, and in the elevators. So much so, that by the end of our time in Turkey, I couldn’t get this groove out of my head!
I feel blessed that music has brought me to so many places around the world. Through this travel I’ve learned at least one thing. No matter where we are, we will never see that place through any other eyes but our own.
I hope you enjoy “Turkish Twang.” Just try to imagine this southern boy bouncing down the streets of Taksim with a 9/8 rhythm and a blues riff in his head.
