During my 4 years working with the incredible percussion group Beat the Donkey we played in a lot of unforgettable places, from huge Festivals across the US to castles in Italy and Portugal. This included a particularly memorable gig in July of 2007, at the Starwood Pagan Festival. Here attendees were not only allowed, but encourage, to completely abandon all clothing. Yes, naked, and most people were... totally naked. As if a BTD show isn't wild enough, I assure you that nothing sends a performance over the top like an audience filled with naked people.
Once the band finished playing, in the most ceremonial way, we set the place on fire. The biggest bonfire I've ever seen or imagined, there played host to a thousand twisting bodies, bathing in the warmth of the glowing flames and the vast empty night. With the bright white moon breathing down, inhaling the ashes of inhibition, I made my way around the circle a time or two myself.
I'd like to dedicate this song to BTD, Pagans, Bonfires, and Fading Inhibitions.
Lyrics –
Between the Fire and the Moon, Earth Supports the Pagan Dancing
The Fire is Burning Bright and True, The Full Moon Soft, Sweetly Romancing
In this Sweet Seductive Swoon, Between the Fire and the Moon
Souls Align Behind the Beat, Of the Ancient and Eternal
The Rhythm Moves Us to Our Feet, The Ghosts of Angels Beasts and Devils
We Dance the Uniform Oblique, Through Wordless Language Love Will Speak
